Fire in Kalinga

It is religious conversion, argues Subhasis Mohanty, which is responsible for the recent communal flare-up in Orissa
In the hue and cry that has been raised over the communal flare up in Orissa’s Kandhamal district, the truth has somehow been lost. It is the rampant conversion initiated by Christian missionaries and the sustained opposition to it that led to the killing of the 86-year-old monk and VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati. This first sparked the violence.

The Maoists have been blamed for the killing — a Maoist leader has even claimed responsibility – yet the theory seems difficult to believe. As a senior official said: “If the Government tells the truth, a communal riot would erupt across the State and it would not be possible for the Government to check it.”

Religious conversion is the root reason for the violence. The problem is not new to Orissa. Though it was the first State to pass an anti-conversion law, conversion activities continue unabated.

There has been an upsurge in the Christian population in Orissa in the last 25 years — from 1.7 per cent to 2.4 per cent. The number of Christians in the State now stand at 8,97,861. Similarly, the Christian population in Kandhamal — where much of the recent violence happened — has also increased dramatically.

This wasn’t the first attack on Saraswati. The monk had been attacked earlier as well – in 1971, 1995 and even on December 25, 2007. He had launched a yatra in which he exhorted converts to come back to the Hindu fold. He had also started a literacy programme in the tribal dominated district.

After Laxmanananda died on the night of August 23, Hindu mobs attacked churches and prayer houses. A number of villages were torched. Christians too retaliated. Though officials put the death toll at 10, the number could be higher.

There is an ethnic side to the clashes as well. The conflict broke out between Kandhas and Dalit Panas. The Kandhas are mainly ST and most of them are Hindus. Nearly 70 per cent of Dalit Panas (SCs) are Christians. The Panas have now started demanding reservation for themselves, which is being severely opposed by the Kandhas.

The situation arising out of the death of Saraswati has already led to cracks in the BJP. The rank and file want the party to withdraw support to the State Government, with a section of it even staging a dharna. Buckling under sustained pressure from its members and party workers, the BJP leadership has asked the State Government to act tough on stopping conversion and cow slaughter. BJP State president Suresh Pujari called on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and submitted a four-point charter of demands. The demands included the immediate arrest of the people who killed Saraswati, and an immediate ban on cow slaughter and conversion.

Meanwhile, worried over the deteriorating law and order situation, chairman of the Ambedkar Lohia Vichar Manch, Sangram Mallick, filed a PIL in the Orissa High Court. Acting on the PIL, the Court directed the State Government to provide protection and all help to the people living in riot hit Kandhamal and its vicinity.

Demanding a CBI probe into the incident, the Utkal Christian Council has also filed a PIL in the High Court demanding that proper security be given to them.

While leader of the Opposition, JB Patnaik, alleged that there was total anarchy in the State, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik insisted that normalcy was slowly returning. “The culprits would not be spared,” he said.

Even though the State Government has deployed forces including the CRPF and RAF in the sensitive areas, violence has been continuing in different parts of Kandhamal. (The pioneer)

This is very clear, if the Christians were to forcefully convert, there would be no non-Christians in India -for your knowledge Christianity has been in India for 2,000 years (brought by the Apostle of Christ Himself, St. Thomas) and India had been ruled by the British for quite some time. If forced conversions were on the minds of these people, there would not be any non-Christians left in India. Hence all of this is a lie, if at all there were conversions (especially in the Catholic Church), it is only willingly done, afterall for someone who would see the acts of the Christians like that of Mother Teresa, one might see that there is something in here, that is missing elsewhere.

The real reason for this violence against Christians is one reason only, to uphold and maintain the caste system. Because as per this caste system, one person cannot view another of a different caste as equal. Thus any attempt to promote equality of rights and dignity is met with violence. Christians promoting education and healthcare are at the forefront of bringing dignity to each person (something unheard of in ancient India or even pre-British India) and making them aware of their rights. This cannot be denied by any person (whether Hindu or not), and neither can anyone deny the way that the caste system is structured.

Let me categorically state, without the caste system, the Hindu society will collapse. Thus all endeavours to bring equality in society will be met with VHP/ Bajrang Dal/ BJP with axes, swords, fire, iron rods, etc. Let us wait and see how things unfold in Orissa.

Remember GOD (in whom I believe) is not dead. When humans don’t raise their voice against such atrocities (as the world is practically turning a blind eye), nature will take the cue and unfold something that the state of Orissa has never seen and never will want to see.

The conversion phenomenon needs to be seen in a larger context. Why there should be conversion of religious faith if the missionaries are selfless??.I have seen a fellow Indian commenting in Times of India that the Hinduism is a dying religion and it is a Myth. These kind of crooked mentality certain section of our society maintain and then they preach peace and co-existance!!!.IT IS VERY MUCH EVIDENT THE WHOLE PURPOSE BEHIND THIS CONVERSION PHENOMENA IS TO GAIN MORE AND MORE POLITICAL CULT AND THEREBY INCREASE THE BARGAINING POWER IN THE POLITICS IN INDIA.ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. I would also like to say, the person who opined about Hinduism as a Myth should disown his forefathers if they are Indians!.

PEOPLE INCLUDING ME ARE FULLY AWARE OF THE FACTS AND FIGURES OF THIS RELIGIOUS GAME PLAN HAPPENING IN MY COUNTRY AND WHAT IS THE REASON BEHIND IT.INDIA BECAME A COUNTRY RUN BY SELFISH,CROOKED PSEUDO SECULARISTS…AND I AM VERY MUCH SURE THEY WILL NOT SUCCEED.IF THERE IS A POINT WHEN THEY SUCCEED, THERE WILL BE AN UPRISING IN THIS COUNTRY.
I ALSO CALL UP ON THE NATIONALISTS TO STRIVE FOR A BETTER FURTURE OF OUR COUNTRY…HAVE A UNIFIED APPROACH TO UPLIFT THE POORER SECTION OF OUR CITIZENS SO THAT THEY CAN’T BE EXPLOITED BY THE FORIEGNERS AND PSEUDO SECUALRISTS IN OUR COUNTRY.IMPLEMENT THE UNIFORM CIVIL CODE, SHED THE BULLSHIT CASTE AND CREED, MAKE THE POOR LITERATE, DEMOLISH BLOODY QUOTA SYSTEM, ROOT OUT THE CORRUPTION SO THAT OUR SYSTEM TREAT EVERYONE EQUALLY, ALL RELIGION.
IF THE MISSIONERIES LOVE PEACE , HARMONY & CO-EXISTANCE THEY SHOULD NOT TRY TO CHANGE THE BALANCE IN EXISTING NATURAL RELIGIOUS SENTIMENTS.OTHERWISE THEY WILL FACE BACKLASH.TRADITIONALY INDIA WELCOMED ALL RELIGIONS AND TODAY WE AS A NATION PAYS THE PRICE FOR IT.
IN INDIA SECULARISM MEAN – ANYBODY CAN COME IN AND RAPE OUR NATION….IT STARTED WITH MUGHALS, ARABS, PERSIANS, PORTUGESE, FRENCH, BRITISH…THEN THE LATEST BY CHINESE (1962 & ANYTIME SOON AGAIN!)…. AND THE LIST CONTINUES TO GROW!!!!….
    THANKS TO PSEUDO-SECULARISTS IN INDIA.
THANKS TO SUCCEFULL VOTE BANK POLITICS OF GANDHI DYNASTY, TODAY INDIA IS MORE DIVIDED THAN ANYTIME BEFORE.
